Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso is running for president in the 2022 national elections with former senatorial candidate, Dr. Willie Ong as his running mate for vice president.
This was confirmed in a Facebook post by Cesar Chavez, Domagoso’s chief of staff.
Domagoso, a former movie actor-turned-politician, will formally announce his intention to seek the highest office of the land in a news conference scheduled for this Wednesday, September 22.
Prior to this announcement, Domagoso had already been widely considered as among the “presidentiables” that have figured prominently in pre-election surveys.
So far, senators Panfilo Lacson and Manny Pacquiao have already declared their intention to run. Another senator, Christopher “Bong” Go has been nominated by the faction of Pacquiao’s party, the PDP-Laban, headed by Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi. Go has declined the nomination.
Davao City Sara Duterte, who has been topping the surveys so far has repeatedly said that she will not seek the presidency while Vice President Leonor “Leni” Robredo is still keeping her options open but said that she will consider running for the presidency if arch-rival, Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, who formally contested her 2016 election victory, will run.
Ong, who lost his bid for a Senate seat in 2019, will face an equally tough field of vice presidentiables that include Senate President Tito Sotto, who will be Lacson’s running mate and President Rodrigo Duterte himself, who has also expressed his intention to seek the vice presidency.
